Dr. Hames-García regularly teaches undergraduate courses in Ethnic Studies such as ES 254 Introduction to Chicanx and Latinx Studies, ES 301 Theoretical Perspectives, ES 352 Social Equity and Criminal Justice, ES 440/540 Race, Literature, and Culture, ES 450/550 Race and Incarceration, and ES 460/560 Race, Culture, Empire.
Prof. Hames-García grew up in the Portland, Oregon area, where he graduated from Rex Putnam High School. After leaving Oregon to attend graduate school and then living and working in New York, Indiana, Alabama, and California for 13 years, he happily returned to Oregon in 2005 to join Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon. He served as department head from 2006-2011. He was also director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality Studies (CRESS) from 2006-2011 and director of the Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) from 2014-2015. He was the recipient of a Lambda Literary Award from the Lambda Literary Foundation in 2011.
He is a member of the City of Eugene's Civilian Review Board, which reviews the handling of complaints against the Eugene Police Department, and has served as a board member for the Community Alliance of Lane County and for Sponsors, Inc.
