Professor Sharon Luk’s The Life of Paper Wins Two 2018 Book Awards

December 15, 2018 — The Ethnic Studies Department congratulates our colleague, Sharon Luk, for winning two prestigious book awards for her first monograph, The Life of Paper: Letters and Poetics of Living Beyond Captivity (2017, University of California Press)! In November 2018, the American Studies Association (ASA) presented Luk with the Lora Romero First Book Prize, which comes with a lifetime ASA membership.

Ethnic and Native Studies Instructor Jennifer O’Neal Wins the 2018-19 Yale University Henry Roe Cloud Fellowship

December 15, 2018 — The Ethnic Studies Department congratulates our colleague, Jennifer O’Neal, for winning the prestigious Henry Roe Cloud Dissertation Writing Fellowship at Yale University! Sponsored by the Yale Group for the Study of Native America (YGSNA), this fellowship supports promising doctoral candidates working on pressing issues related to the American Indian experience and Indigenous Studies. Jennifer will spend winter and spring at Yale to work toward completing her dissertation in History from Georgetown University.

June 19, 2018 — The Ethnic Studies Department congratulates our colleague, Ernesto Martínez, for winning a prestigious 2018 Faculty Excellence Award! Each year, fellow faculty, the deans, and the provost select a small group of faculty members to recognize for their “world-class research and teaching.” Awardees win $20,000 salary supplement or $26,100 for research support.

Ethnic Studies Professor Dr. Charise Cheney Awarded the Tykeson Teaching Award for 2018

April 25, 2018 — On April 24, Dr. Charise Cheney was awarded the 2018 Tykeson Teaching Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching, on behalf of the University of Oregon’s College of Arts and Sciences.Dr. Cheney has been a faculty member since 2009, having served as an academic advisor as well as teaching numerous courses within the Ethnic Studies Department. The department has nine core faculty members.On Tuesday afternoon, Phil Scher, Divisional Dean for Social Sciences, surprised Cheney during her Intro to African American Studies class.

Ethnic Studies Professor Dr. Laura Pulido Featured in Cascade Magazine

March 1, 2017 — Dr. Laura Pulido, a professor of ethnic studies and geography who joined the UO last year, has spent more than two decades examining why people live where they live and, as a result, what environmental hazards they face.  Pulido argued that geographers were overlooking ways that discrimination had permeated urban development in the United States for 150 years.
